Official Regulation for Charging Points

Electric vehicle charge points sold in Great Britain for private (domestic or workplace) use are being regulated to help manage the increase in electricity demand from the transition to electric vehicles.

The regulations ensure charge points have smart functionality, allowing the charging of an electric vehicle when there is less demand on the grid, or when more renewable electricity is available. The regulations also ensure that charge points meet certain device-level requirements, enabling a minimum level of access, security and information for consumers.

The UK government has introduced regulations for electric vehicle (EV) smart charge points to manage the increase in electricity demand from the transition to electric vehicles. The regulations ensure that charge points have smart functionality, allowing the charging of an electric vehicle when there is less demand on the grid, or when more renewable electricity is available.

According to the Smart Charge Points Regulations, as of 30 June 2022, all EV chargers sold in the UK for home or workplace use must support a certain level of smart functionality and meet a set of minimum requirements.

The regulations apply to electric vehicle private charge points which are sold for use in a domestic or workplace environment in Great Britain.

Some Of Our Projects

Compare EV Tariffs

Electric vehicle (EV) tariffs are energy tariffs aimed at owners of electric vehicles that use their home electricity to charge their car. There are generally two types of EV tariffs: two-rate tariffs and single-rate tariffs. Two-rate tariffs offer cheaper electricity overnight, while single-rate tariffs offer a flat rate throughout the day, but it's often discounted if you have an EV. Currently, there are no single-rate EV tariffs that we could find.

You can usually only get these tariffs if you own an EV. Some energy suppliers are again offering tariffs aimed at electric vehicle owners, after most were pulled from the market due to the energy crisis. If you're one of the 850,000 EV owners in the UK, you can compare the best deals from different suppliers, learn the pros and cons of two-rate and single-rate tariffs, and see the average costs and savings of EV charging on MoneySavingExpert.com. E.ON Next offers a fixed-term EV tariff called Next Drive that offers lower-priced electricity when you charge your electric vehicle between 12am and 7am, with 100% renewable electricity at no extra cost. You need a smart meter to be eligible for Next Drive and can schedule your charging times to get the best night rates. You can also find the best EV tariff for your home charging needs and save hundreds of pounds each year by comparing the off-peak rates, peak rates, and standing charges of different EV tariffs from Octopus, EDF, British Gas, OVO, E.on, Ecotricity, Green Energy UK, and more on evcompared.co.uk .

Find a charge point
near you

If you are looking for electric vehicle (EV) charge points near you, there are several ways to find them. One option is to use a dedicated app or website that shows the location, availability, and cost of charge points in your area. Some examples are PlugShare, ChargePoint, and Zap-Map. Another option is to use a general search engine like Bing or Google and type in "EV charge points" followed by your location. You can also use voice assistants like Siri or Cortana to ask for the nearest charge points. However, these methods may not be as accurate or up-to-date as the dedicated apps or websites.
